You could have gone to kxlu.com to make your donation, and if you wanted, earmarked your support in the comments section for our 35-year-old, Cat & Monkey show. Every donation over 25 bucks would have gotten a set of

We’re saddened to hear of the passing of Lester Sterling, alto saxophonist of the pioneering band, The Skatilites. He was the last living hornsman of the original lineup, and with “Ska” Sterling having departed this doomed planet, a page is now turned in music history. The Skatilites as a functioning legacy/tribute band still play and keep their music alive (with original vocalist Doreen Shaeffer), but we tip our pork pie tonight to Lester and his

Last night as we bushwacked through overgrown jungles, passed long-forgotten idols, and basked in mysterious landscapes both real and heavily concocted. Spring hadn’t sprung until the growl of the tiger reverberated through the quiet village on our annual Martin Denny Easter Exotic-extravaganza! THRILLED to a seven-octave vocal range! TREMBLED upon reaching landfall of the Forbidden Island, and SWOONED over hypnotizing hula hips! Music from Martin Denny, Les Baxter, Yma Sumac, Tak Shindo, Arthur Lyman, Elizabeth

The flames of passion reignite a Molotov tradition – LOVEFEST! Love Loves to Love Love. Spinning songs smitten with gaining, losing, keeping, increasing, complicating, and simplifying love. No matter what current state of cupidity you find yourself in, humming along or playing the home game of counting the times a “love” word is mentioned in each song – very much encouraged! 10:02 PM Dionne Warwick I Say a Little PrayerDionne Warwick’s Golden Hits Part 2 10:05

Episode 04.06.2021
To appease the Gods and propitiate the rites of spring, there must be a ceremony, so prepare to sacrifice your evening in reverent homage to the artists of The Martin Denny Easter Special. This yearly ritual will invoke the adventurous, mysterious, and passionate spirits of faraway places, crouching tigers, and forbidden temples. One of the crumbling pillars of MCH has always been Exotica music and we are more than qualified to captain this chugging jungle cruise up the rivers charted by Martin Denny, Les Baxter, Yma Sumac, Arthur Lyman, Tak Shindo, Elizabeth Waldo, Korla Pandit, and other lost souls. Join us in our effort to put the Island back into Easter.
Episode 03.30.2021
Coming up this evening, sweet rocksteady from The Heptones, Tropical Cumbia from Ranil y Su Conjunto, A Bollywood Freakout, Singapore Pop from the Siglap 5, and a beauty from Los Tonks – taken from “Algo Salvaje,” as seen below. If that wasn’t enough, we’ll sweeten the deal with a strange, funky monkey, a high stakes visit to Encino Royale, and yes, a song embarrassingly enough, called Tater Poon.
Episode 03.23.2021
With the recent passing of Bunny Wailer, a chapter is closed on one of the greatest singing groups in Jamaican music (or anywhere for that matta), and a sure-fire favorite of ours. Tonight we’ll play a set of early ska and soul shimmering with the sweet harmonies of Bob, Bunny, and Pete! Also on the slate, some head bobbing jazz covers, headbanging garage, and a head-scratcher from birthday boy, William Shatner, when he takes on The Cramps!
Episode 03.16.2021
An original recipe show tonight with all the herbs and spices you come to expect. Tune in and hear a nod to the late, toasting legend, URoy, fight the law with Los OVNI’s (en Español) , dig some deep Soul, Swedish pop from teenage Agnetha (pre-Abba!), and the return of Japanese “Rockabirri” hero, Masaki Hirao! Featured here in all her splendor, Ponchita, singer of Sonora Casino and wife of bandleader/founder Hugo Macedo. Tonight’s first song is their far-out, kitchen sink descarga, “Astronautus a Mercurio” that will leave you floating in your tin can! Add to this a new monkey song and another caper of Encino Royale and we’ve got a bucket-full of fun.
Episode 03.09.2021
Our salutary spins from late greats Big Daddy URoy, the father of Jamaican toasting, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Champion of the Beats and founder of City Lights Book Store! Also in our sights, a set lurking with Secret Agents, Special Agents and Travel agents, and the venal validation of 60’s Mexican garage goons, Los Sinners, by none other than Luis Buñuel!
Episode 02.02.2021
Seems like most guests to the Mahi Mahi room eventually become our good pals – it’s just how we seem to roll. One of our most beautiful friendships has been with the Lion of Los Angeles, Plague Bard and Bouzouki Banger, Zander Schloss. On a recent visit to our Soul Shakin’ Safehouse, Zander stopped by for an evening of Shrimp Po Boys, stories of life on the road and the birth of his new music label, Piece of Pie Records! Ever the traveling troubadour, he also brought along his guitars and filled our night with some in-studio songs!
Episode 02.16.2021
It’s one of those nights we wait all year for, when we turn a bug into a feature competing for the “Survival of The Fattest.” What would Mardi Gras be without the music and culture of New Orleans, Louisiana and even South Texas where the edges get blurry as they give way to the swamps . From the uptown strutting of the Second Line Drummers, to the twinkle of the Will-O-Wisp near a shotgun shack in the Bayou, we’ll be serving up Blues, R&B, Soul, Funk and Zydeco. Take it from the “Queen of the Gulf Coast herself,” Barbara Lynn, and tune in ‘else “You’ll Lose A Good Thing!”
